Bottled Up
what happens when we suppress our emotions.
Bottled Up was an immersive performance exploring the ways emotions build and accumulate over time. Created by the The Multi-Story Orchestra Young Creatives with music leaders and composer Kate Whitley, the work examined what happens when frustration, tension, and anticipation are held inside—and the release that follows when those feelings are expressed.
Under the musical leadership of choir director Daniel Thomas, the production unfolded through a sequence of musical and narrative moments. Performances began with musicians dispersed throughout the space, inviting audiences to experience the music up close before the show gradually built towards a full-ensemble finale, combining both intimacy and collective energy.
Through newly written songs and orchestral arrangements shaped by themes of pressure and release, Bottled Up conveyed the process of reaching a tipping point. The work balanced moments of tension with bursts of energy, creating a performance that was both expressive and engaging, allowing audiences to follow the emotional arc clearly.
Audiences responded positively to the performance’s immediacy and immersive structure, noting how the combination of interactive musical moments and a climactic orchestral conclusion created a shared sense of emotional experience. Bottled Up stood out within the orchestra’s repertoire for its careful handling of complex emotion and its dynamic, spatially engaging presentation.
